Nail-Biting Victory at 9/10 State Finals

Congratulations to NBSC Mackellar Girls and NBSC Balgowlah Boys for taking out the 2019 NSW Touch Football Year 9/10 State Championships.

It was a fresh start to the day but the teams were hot and ready to go come 9:00 am.

38 teams from 16 Regional Qualifying Events ventured to The Kingsway Playing Fields to compete in the 2019 National School Series, Year 9/10 NSW State Final.

Schools from far and wide were competing against each other in the hope to progress through to the Top 8, and potentially take out the 2019 title of State Champion.

In 2019 we saw some great new schools qualify into the State Final Event. Games were hot from the start with the final’s series far from predictable.

The Quarter Finals were all competitive games where players could not rest as each team fought to progress through the final series. A drop off in the Girls QF game between Monte Sant’ Angelo and Orange High School was the first of a number of drop-offs demonstrating how tight the competitions were as schools fought for a spot in the State Final.

Taree High School, St Joseph’s Regional and Holy Spirit College Girls teams all tried their hearts out but unfortunately fell short in their Quarter Final match ups.

Each QF game for the boys was just as close as the next. The match between Tomaree High School and St Dominic’s College went down to to the wire and required another drop-off. St Dominic’s scoring in a 4-on-4 drop-off and progressing into the Semi-Finals.

Hunter Sports, Kildare CC & Patrician Brothers Blacktown all narrowly missed out on their chance to progress to a Semi-Final.

The Girls Semi finals saw Hills Sports High School take on Orange High School and Narrabeen Sports High School play NBSC Mackellar. While Hills Sports put up a strong showing in their game against Orange High School it was the girls from the West who progressed with a narrow 4-3 victory. NBSC Mackellar Girls & Narrabeen Sports HS were nil-all (0-0) when the final buzzer went, forcing them to a drop-off. The Mackellar Girls found a hole in the Narrabeen defensive line and managed to score progressing the Mackellar ladies through to the Grand Final against Orange High School.

The Boys Semi-Finals finished similarly to the Girls. St Edward’s going down to St Dominic’s 4-5 in their match, while Narrabeen Sports fought hard with NBSC Balgowlah but lost in a drop off.

The Girls Grand Final match was fast-paced as both teams went try for try throughout. Despite playing in their 7th game of the day, there was nothing slowing these two teams down. Orange High School coming up short in their fight for the title as Mackellar took out the championship 5-4.

The boy’s match-up saw both teams orchestrating tries through long balls from their middles to unmarked wings as they battled throughout the game. The Balgowlah team scoring in the final minutes of the game to pull ahead of St Dominic’s and take the State Title 3-2.

Congratulations also to our 2 players of the final; for NBSC Mackellar, Kiiahla Duff and for NBSC Balgowlah, Joshua Turner.

The Top 8 Teams in both the Boys & Girls divisions are to receive an invite to Touch Football Australia’s, National School Series, being held in conjunction with the National Youth Championships at Sunshine Coast Stadium, Queensland from Wednesday 18th September – Friday 20th September.
