Doyalson’s Quadruple Quest of Country

Fields like Wembley and rays of sunshine greeted the participants on a glorious Day One of the 2017 Country Championships in Dubbo today. With the venue and weather in pristine condition, the performances across the competition were just as awesome.

The Doyalson Dragons Men’s Open team have continued their stellar form, with strong performances throughout sending an ominous warning to all challengers as they search for their fourth straight Country Championships title. The Dragons have certainly been a cut above the competition thus far and are using this weekend to help them prepare for their maiden Vawdon Cup Grand Final in a week’s time.

Previous Country Champions the Wollongong Devils, have regrouped after missing the Vawdon Cup season and are also showing their class in doing the business in their pool. The two heavyweights look destined for the final which will take place at 2.25pm Sunday.

The Devils Ladies have certainly put themselves in contention of the Women’s Open competition despite a fright from the youthful Nelson Bay Neptunes. The Women’s competition is close with Wagga Vipers and the Neptunes leading the way along with the Devils. With the superstars Jessica McCall and Ash (nee Dobbins) Stanley returning to lead the Devils on their quest for the Country title, the Devils will certainly be thereabouts come finals.

In the Mixed Division the Port Macquarie Makos and Port Hunter Marauders are leading their pools and certainly living up to their top 5 State rankings. The surprise of the Mixed Division has been the Young Bluetongues who are in their first representative event and in contention for the final series.

Games will commence at 8am on Sunday, with the final round games prior to the commencement of the final series.
