Port Macquarie is once again a buzz with excitement as it welcomes the highly anticipated NSW Touch Football State Cup. This premier sporting event, which has been a staple in Port Macquarie for 34 consecutive years, promises a weekend filled with high-caliber competition and community spirit.
Port Macquarie Mayor Adam Roberts emphasised the deep connection between the town and the State Cup. “We are thrilled to host this premier event, which is not only a celebration of talent but also a significant contributor to our local economy and tourism,” said Mayor Roberts. He expressed gratitude to NSW Touch Football, the local Touch Association, and council staff for their efforts in maintaining the strong partnership and ensuring the event’s success year after year.
This collaboration is a testament to the mutual support between the sporting community and the town. Mayor Roberts acknowledged the transformative impact of the event, which brings over 6,000 visitors, 230 teams, and 300 referees to the region, boosting local businesses and strengthening community ties.
Dean Russell, General Manager of NSW Touch, described the State Cup as the pinnacle of touch football in the state. “We’re bringing some of the best players in the world to Port Macquarie,” he shared. The event features premier athletes who recently represented Australia at the World Cup in Nottingham, showcasing their skills across divisions from under-20s to Men’s over-60s.
This year, the competition also holds added significance as a key selection event for the State of Origin Series against Queensland in 2024. Dean Russell highlighted the unique opportunity for players to demonstrate their abilities to selectors and earn their place in the prestigious tournament.
Beyond the action on the field, the State Cup is a celebration of community spirit. The collaboration between NSW Touch Football, local council, and the broader community creates an event that is as much about connection as it is about competition.
“This is more than just a tournament—it’s a whole-of-community event,” Dean Russell noted, stating he values the hospitality of Port Macquarie, thus their long standing relationship, coupled with its stunning coastal backdrop, making it the perfect home for the State Cup.
As the State Cup unfolds, spectators can look forward to a weekend of exceptional talent, and unforgettable moments. Both Mayor Roberts and Dean Russell expressed their optimism for this year’s State Cup promising to be another remarkable chapter in the rich history of touch football in NSW.
