With 1237 games to be played the NSW Touch Association once again brings the biggest representative touch football event in the world to Port Macquarie this weekend. “It is a massive undertaking to prepare firstly, then run successfully this event with what you might call ‘skeleton’ staff and volunteers” stated NSWTA General Manager Dean Russell. “But we absolutely love the event” he added.
This years Junior State Cup is the first with the forced restriction of no second teams from clubs being allowed and also the first time it will be a full three (3) day event. “In many ways we have fallen victim to our own success but the continued growth of the event has meant we can no longer accept second teams from clubs in divisions. It is certainly not a decision we liked making and were disappointed in having to make. However its one that had to be made to ensure we can continue to run the event in a reasonable time frame and fit all the elements of the events logistics into the precinct. Even though we have gone to three (3) full days” said Russell. “I can understand the disappointment but I am not sure sometimes the participants actually realise how complex and in depth the behind scenes planning in putting this event on has become”
The 2017 version of the Junior State Cup will will see some 340 teams representing 46 Affiliates across the state compete for the title and prestige to become State Champions in 10 divisions. It will require 400 referees to officiate the all the games over the three (3) days. Manly Warringah Touch Association will be looking to win an unprecedented 7 th consecutive Club Championship in 2017. While combatants from as far South as Wagga, Balina and Lismore in the North and Parkes in West will all descend on the region in hope of taking home one (1) or more of the titles on offer. Teams from Sydney and the Hunter region will also be sending strong outfits north in search of glory and locals Port Macquarie are a strong hold of Junior Touch with large numbers of children participating regularly at Tuffins Lane and are sure to want to give the finals a shake.
Games commence at 8.30am Friday morning and progress through the finals on Sunday which will commence from 2.30pm. The prestigious Girls 18’s and Boys 18’s will be played at 3pm and 3.30pm respectively.
