This year saw the delivery of the inaugural Wonder Women in Touch Summit — an initiative that already stands as one of the most significant steps forward for NSW Touch Football in recent years.
The Summit was brought to life thanks to the vision, application, and drive of the General Manager Dean Russell, whose determination ensured the event became a reality. It is exciting to see that the impact of this initiative is already reaching beyond Touch Football, with other sports beginning to move forward with similar programs.
The event itself was outstanding. Facilitator Ali Plath set the tone perfectly — light-hearted, engaging, and at times leaving the room in stitches. Hearing a room full of women laughing together was a powerful reminder of the energy, joy, and connection this type of gathering can create.
Angela Jenkins delivered a raw and honest session that resonated strongly with participants, reassuring them that they were not alone in their experiences. Guest speakers Kylie Hilder, Sally Irwin, and Leona Bennett spoke candidly about the challenges of working in male-dominated environments and shared strategies they have used to overcome barriers. Their encouragement on how women can ensure their voices are heard left a lasting impression.
The breakout sessions, while smaller, evolved into intimate and supportive circles where women openly shared their challenges and the changes they want to see in sport. This created a safe and genuine environment for conversation and connection.
A particular highlight was hearing from Casey Dellacqua, who spoke warmly about her career, her transition into a male-dominated sporting media role, and the persistence it took to be given opportunities. Her openness and relatability made her feel like part of the Touch Football family from the moment she walked through the door.
The day was inspiring, engaging, and the beginning of something truly special for our sport.
