Congratulations Simon Lyne!

NSW Touch Football are proud to award Lower Blue Mountains Touch Association’s (LBMTA) very own, Simon Lyne, as Volunteer of the Month for April 2026.

To share some of Simon’s story, we asked him:

1. What motivated you to start volunteering with your local Touch Association, and how long have you been involved?

I’ve been fortunate to be part of the NSW Touch Football community for over 40 years. I’ve been involved with the Lower Blue Mountains Touch Football community for the past seven years, including serving on the committee for the last four.

I initially volunteered to help set up fields while my kids were playing. After spending so much time at Warrimoo Oval, I figured many hands make light work. That small step quickly grew into a much deeper involvement, and I now serve as Vice President and Representative Director.

My goal has always been simple — to see kids out on the field playing the great game of touch football, enjoying themselves, building friendships, and being part of a positive and supportive environment.

2. What do you enjoy most about volunteering within the Touch Football community?

The most rewarding part is seeing so many kids playing with smiles on their faces. It’s watching their confidence grow week by week, seeing friendships form, and knowing they feel part of something bigger than just a game.

There’s nothing better than watching players develop their skills, support their teammates, and genuinely love being out on the field. Knowing you’ve played even a small role in creating that environment is incredibly fulfilling.

3. Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your time volunteering?

One of the things I’m most proud of is helping drive a strategic focus on girls’ participation, which has seen female involvement at the club double over the past three years.

A key part of this has been creating strong partnerships with regional affiliates and actively attending regional gala days, helping to build pathways, strengthen relationships across the region, and provide more opportunities for our players to develop and compete.

We have also established the LBMTA Academy for younger players, providing structured development opportunities, building fundamental skills early, and creating a clear pathway into representative touch football.

The most memorable moment from this initiative was the club winning its first Junior State Cup title. Coaching alongside Molly Jones, and with the incredible support of our parents and wider club community, made it a truly special achievement and a milestone moment for everyone involved.

4. What do you enjoy or love most about Touch Football?

Great question — what’s not to like!

For me, it’s about creating a positive environment where players of all levels feel supported and encouraged. It’s also about developing strong training programs for junior players, whether they’re playing socially, competitively at club level, or progressing into representative pathways.

Watching young players grow, improve, and gain confidence both on and off the field is what makes it all worthwhile.

5. What advice would you give to someone thinking about getting involved as a volunteer in Touch Football?

Jump in and get involved!

The enjoyment you get from watching kids grow, develop, and enjoy the game is priceless. Whether it’s helping set up fields, coaching, or supporting behind the scenes, every contribution makes a difference — and you’ll get far more out of it than you expect.
