NSW Touch Football are proud to award Berkeley Vale Touch Association’s very own, Jessica Kidd, as Volunteer of the Month for July 2026.
To share some of Jessica’s story, we asked her:
1. What motivated you to start volunteering with your local Touch Association, and how long have you been involved?
My kids are the reason we started touch football; they played from age 8 until now, at ages 17 and 20. I started managing/coaching the last 5 years and then began volunteering officially with my girls on the committee the last two years. I played a couple of years for masters before back issues meant I had to focus only on other areas of touch. I recently completed my referee course, so I will try to help in that area this coming season.
2. What do you enjoy most about volunteering within the Touch Football community?
The friendships, the organizing (I have a bit of OCD), and most of all the smiles on people’s faces when they have a stress-free, enjoyable time at any touch footy event.
3. Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your time volunteering?
I have a few memorable moments that will stay with me: winning volunteer of the year twice in a row within the club, receiving a Blues Award last year and having my 3 daughters be part of the committee and volunteer their time. They are young so I am impressed that they are giving up a lot of time to help our club and the broader touch community. (I am hoping my influence on them made their decision easy regarding volunteering)
4. What do you enjoy or love most about Touch Football?
I just love everything about touch footy. The game, the training, the social aspect, the organizing, the different people you meet, the amazing referees and their commitment to the game. Without referees we cannot play properly! I love watching our tiny tots learn to throw and envision them in our rep teams at a later time. Hoping that a little grassroots touch football at such a young age will inspire them to stay in the game.
5. What advice would you give to someone thinking about getting involved as a volunteer in Touch Football?
My biggest advice to someone thinking about volunteering is to just give it a go. Even if its just offering to set up or pack away on game day. Jump in the canteen for a small stint. Don’t come game day? Then offer to do something else. Reach out to your club! Even behind-the-scenes prep work like printing, laminating, regularly checking websites for competition dates being released for rep season, picking up the bread/rolls or stock, doing the hooter on game day, stocking fridges, stocking food, or checking that bathrooms are tidy, etc.
No matter how big or how small your contribution, it will always be appreciated.
